A tax audit is an important and inevitable process for the implementation of the management of the observance and enforcement of tax laws by the tax authorities. For a representative office (RO), the tax audit is focused on the personal income tax of foreign and Vietnamese employees working for the RO as the RO is not a revenue generating enterprise.

To effectively coordinate with tax authorities during the audit process, the RO needs to have extensive knowledge of tax law as well as practical experience, especially as tax regulations and practice can change significantly during the period when the RO is audited. Understanding and mastering the audit process as well as the rights and obligations of taxpayers and tax authorities is extremely important.

The RO should be aware of its compliance status with the tax laws and any potential tax issues that could arise during the audit, as well as preparing supporting documents for explanation for the tax audit event.
